Covenant Signs

Ordinary Time is the longest season of the Christian year, lasting for more than half of the calendar year from Pentecost to Advent (i.e., from May to December). Traditionally, Ordinary Time is a time for spiritual growth and diving more deeply into biblical stories. While Advent to Pentecost follows the events of Christ’s life, Ordinary Time allows us to see how Christ is revealed throughout the Scriptures, and how Jesus is present in the ordinary rhythms and habits of our life together as the body of Christ. At Community CRC, we usually split Ordinary Time into two parts: summer and fall. In the summer, we take a slow walk through a particular book, story, or theme in the Bible. In the fall, as our Communities kick off, we take some time to ask the question: “What does it mean to be a Christian church?” This year, we’re going to be looking at our identity as God’s "covenant" people, proclaimed in the Gospel and sealed by the "sacraments" of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. A "covenant" is a significant agreement between God and those who worship and follow Him. In churches, significant agreements are usually remembered with signs and symbols and frequently celebrated with special events. "Sacraments" are signs and symbols in a class of their own and both Baptism and the Lord's Supper (sometimes called "Holy Communion" or the "Eucharist") are special events central to the Christian life. In other words, this sermon series would be a good time to join us, either as someone new to the Christian way or as someone who wants to reaffirm and more fully enjoy what you already believe.
