The disciples on the road to Emmaus were people who had lost all hope for the future when their rabbi, Jesus of Nazareth, was crucified. The stranger who walked with them explained how Jesus's death and resurrection were all part of God's plan to redeem Israel--and all humanity--from bondage to sin and death. He restored their hope in Jesus as the Messiah, despite their misgivings. Finally, the stranger revealed himself to the two disciples in the breaking of bread.
Jesus Christ lived, died, and was resurrected in order to restore hope to those who are living without hope. Now, as then, he reveals himself to us in the breaking of bread.
