He Has Shown You What is Good
February 2, 2020 Pastor: John Medendorp
Passage: Micah 6:1–6:8
Micah 6:8 ("do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God") is one of the most well-known and well-liked verses of the entire Bible, but most people are not familiar with the context of this verse.
In this passage, the prophet was pronouncing God's judgement on the Israelties, and he was pointing out to them that they had missed the point of what it means to be God's people. They didn't understand that God does not want his people to make absurdly lavish burnt offerings to him, as if they could buy his favour--and he certainly doesn't want human sacrifice or the other abhorrent practices that the followers of pagan gods engaged in at that time, and that some Israelites were emulating. Instead, God has shown us what is good--to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with him.
