Predestined for Adoption

Scripture: Ephesians 1:3–14

The early Christians in Ephesus, were a remarkably diverse mixture of people--people from all parts of the Roman Empire and beyond, from all levels of society.  In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul sought to promote unity amongst all these very different groups of people.  He did this by rooting all of these people in God's promises to us.  In particular, Paul referred to three themes from the Old Testament:

  • Adoption: God adopted the Israelites as his chosen people when he made the covenant with Abraham and his descendants; in the new covenant, sealed with the blood of Jesus Christ, God extends this adoption to all of us.
  • Passover: Just as God delivered the Israelites from the bondage to the Egyptians, he delivers us from bondage to sin and death.
  • Inheritance: Just as the Israelites inherited the Promised Land, we inherit the kingdom of God.
