Family is a big part of the Christmas season, not just according to the world's carefully non-religious interpretation of Christmas, but for Christians as well. In this passage, we read a genealogy of Jesus, going back to Abraham; in essence, we are introduced to the family of Jesus. And as we've learned in this sermon series about the foremothers of Jesus, there is some troubling history in that family--stories of suffering, abuse, and deception.
However, God used these people, despite their brokenness, to bring salvation and hope to us all, through the birth of Jesus. This genealogy emphasizes Jesus's humanity; he was born into a family, with a history, just like all of us. Through Jesus, God adopts us into his family--regardless of our troubling histories, regardless of our brokenness.
