Paul's prayer in this passage seems a little odd, on reflection. Why would Paul pray that the Ephesians would know the love of Jesus? After all, as followers of Jesus, one would expect that they already knew he loves them. Most Christians today learned this, and are learning this, as little children--"Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so".
However, Paul's prayer for the Ephesians means much more than just the line from the children's hymn quoted above. He didn't just want them to know the love of Jesus as a tidbit of theological information; he wanted them to experience it in evey aspect of their lives.
Let Paul's prayer for the Ephesians be our prayer for ourselves. May we experience the love of Jesus in all aspects of our lives, and let that love overflow into our community and the wider world.
