Many of us have a tendency to become obsessed over trivial things. The tabloid press is just one example of this--a huge media industry, covering the lives of the rich and famous to the smallest detail. It seems that nobody who reads the tabloids realizes that the lives of the rich and famous are (a) not all that important and (b) really none of our business.
The disciples were not immune to this. In these passages, they asked Jesus two questions: one about the fate of John ("the disciple whom Jesus loved"), and one about when the kingdom would be restored to Israel. Jesus gave the same answer to both questions: "That's none of your business". He reminded them that they should stop obsessing over trival things, and start doing the work he called them to do.
