Here, at the end of the book of Judges, the ancient Israelites hit a mind-boggling new low. One horrific act of rape and murder set off a chain of similarly horrific acts, including mass murder, pillage, kidnapping, and more rape. One of the ugliest parts of these ugly events is that so many of the victims were women--just as women are all too often victimized today.
This is an brutal, sinful world, and as a part of this world, we too are caught up in the world's brutality and sinfulness. God calls us to repent of our sins, to lament the evil in this world and in our own hearts, and to repair the wrongs we have done and the wrongs to which we have contributed. We are also called to set our hearts on the myriad, un-named victims of violence, and to never forget them.
