These passages deal with Gideon, one of the most well-known judges of ancient Israel. Most of us are familiar with the Sunday school story about Gideon--brave, noble, and righteous Gideon--routing the Midianites with 300 men and the power of the Lord. However, we are much less familiar with the unsavoury details of his life--how "brave" Gideon kept getting cold feet and asking God for signs, how "noble" Gideon abused and even killed some of his fellow Israelites, and how "righteous" Gideon stumbled into idolatry.
The story of Gideon, both his defeat of the Midianites and the broader story of his life, teaches us two important lessons. First, God uses all sorts of people to carry out his purposes, even those who we wouldn't expect. Second, and most important, God is our Saviour, not any person.
