Darkness can be frightening--any little child, and anyone who's cared for a little child, knows this. Some types of darkness, however, can't be chased away by a sunrise or by throwing a light switch, and some fears can't be calmed with just a hug and some kind words.
John's words about the light of the world are a comfort to those of us who are dealing with darkness. The darkness will not win, not now and not ever. Not even death can stop God's plan to save and renew us.
Note, however, that we are called to be witnesses to the light, just as John the Baptist was a witness to the light. We are called to bear witness to the light of Jesus Christ, in a world living in darkness.
