August 19, 2018 Series: Trees

Scripture: James 3:1–12

Everyone is familar with the phrase, "talk is cheap".  The apostle James even uses this phrase earlier in his letter, in a roundabout way ("faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead"--James 1:17).

However, while talk can be cheap, it can also be horribly destructive.  We use our tongues to condemn, belittle, and curse those around us--the very people we should be reaching out to with the love of God.  Words have been used, and are still used, to marginalize and even dehumanize minorities in society; this has all too often set the stage for discrimination, violence, and even mass murder.  In this day and age, the rise of social media has made words even more dangerous and harmful.

As followers of Jesus Christ, we must be careful to use our words to build others up, not to tear them down.  We have been bought with the blood of Jesus--all of us, including our tongues.
